CHRISTMAS SPIRIT IN NEW YORK CITY
"HOLIDA SPIRITS ON SALE HERE"
flashed the misspelled liquor store sign -
no one seemed to notice that something was missing
The broken man on the bench
seemed too involved
in trying to make a blanket
out of used red wrapping paper
the fat man with the bell cheer (HO HO HO)
seemed too involved
in keeping his beard straight
while he drank his Christmas
the rich lady in the car drink
seemed too involved
at slowing down her driver
while she fixed her third (but not last) pre-party
the lonely soldier on the corner
seemed too involved
in procuring some companionship
to help celebrate his Christmas liberty with
the stuffy businessman in his company limo
seemed too involved
in daydreaming about cheating with his secretary at the office party
and ignoring the neighborhood he was driving through
the hungry woman with the cart sandwiches
seemed too involved
in finding her life
amidst other peoples' cans and half-eaten
it is Christmas Eve in New York City
and it seems everyone is too involved
to notice that
something is missing
