FIRE TREE
                                                          Fire tree beneath my window

Gold and amber in the sun __
                                                              Fallen leaves beneath your branches

Like glowing puddles in the sun.
You take on in proud succession

                                                              Roles all pine trees shun.
Fire tree, brief queen of autumn

When the first cold wind is king
                                                             Stand bare-branched in bleakest winter

So the snow and ice can cling.
You are a frui t tree in th esumrn er,

                                                              A flowering tree in spring.
