beta beta beta Beta Beta Beta is n national honorary bio- logical society whose motto is, "not only to live, but to know living." This has been one of the most active years for Tri-Beta at Western Maryland. It began with a tree-labeling proj- ect. Students will notice that some of the prominent trees on campus now have a metal tag on them giving the scientific name or the tree. Our next project was an attempt to raise chickens from fertilized eggs. Thi~, however, was not too successful. Tri-Beht \V,\S host to one of the outstanding assembly speakers, Dr. Ralph Turner of Yale University, a renowned historian. A tea was given at which time faculty and Tri-Betn mem- bers had an opportunity to meet Dr. Turner personally. Following the ten Dr. Turner gave a very informative lecture on "Medicine, A Factor in History." As in previous venrs Tri-Beta sponsored a movie, the profits ~f which went to the Milton Hendrickson Memorial Schobrship Fund. This money is available to a deserving Tri-Betu member to be used for summer study. Tri-Beta also has speci,)) functicns, one of which is the initiation held each semester at Dr. Sturdivant's horne. This year each initi- ate aided in the program by presenting several minutes of original entertainment. The year's ,wtivities came to a conclusion as Trf-Betn members found their way to Catoctin Moun- tain Park where the nnnunl spring picnic was held in early May. 157
