sometimes we stifle breathing
and a second trudges by
perhaps we are standing together
in separate gloomy hallways
looking into smudged windows
reflecting better ways of other
people's lives
perhaps you glance across
the span of emptiness and see me
decorated as i am by time
and tortured memories
and if you look you'll catch me
looking back
in the split second just before
you turn away
and i release my breath
