     A Father's Loss
A cold, numbing reality runs up his spine
The possession he holds most dear
Lies wasting away in a hospital bed
            Stricken by an incurable disease
The man wept when he saw the boy lying prostrate
The only sign of life is a weak heartbeat
                     A slight palpitation
                   Detected by a machine
              Life which once bubbled over
Shrinks into the dark depths of his body
The flowers in a vase by his bedside
Wither like the small boy's strength
                The man's mind wanders
He thinks of the things his son will never do
The tears cascade down his flushed cheeks
The eyes of the boy open wide
To reveal the glaring stare of death
