Whitetailed Deer
Phantoms in the park
The Summer sun sunk
behind the far away hills,
as they slipped out of the shadowy woods
like phantoms in the dark.
They made their nightly passage
onto the fields,
but the hard summer earth
left no trace of their passing.
I would have believed them ghosts
if I had not pursued them
in the waning light.
Only by standing in the same
dew damp field and touching
the fresh nipped vegetation,
did I at last
believe them real.
