As If

                                  by Ange Tremain

As if the command had been given:
                      «Ten-sion»

You raise your heads, stand stiff
          as I enter the room
          all eyes turned to me
                     not really meaning to stare

                                                            staring nevertheless.

And as if you understand
               you walk by

                        press your hand to mine
            and say:

          - He was a good man-
          - Believe me-

          - If there's anythingwe can do-
          - We understand your pain-

I've alphabetized your cards by brand

favorite) (American Greetings are first and my,

           rearranged your flowers:

              Daisies in the kitchen

              Roses in the dining room

              Sweet-peas by my bed .

I'll sit back now to watch them slowly die

slowly dying

As if paper and petals were any sympathy to me.
