RUNNERS EXPERIENCE Western Maryland's Cross Country team had a fine running year, with the women compiling a 6·3 record and the men slip- ping to a 2·9 record. The women were led by outstanding freshman Mary Lynn Schwab, who set several course records and finished a strong lath place in the Middle Atlantic Coast Conference meet. Also placing high in the MAC Conference meet were sophomores Bertt Killingstad (24th). Elaine Lippy (42nd), and Bonnie Schwab (56th), and juniors Barb Peterson (36th) and Stephanie Opdahl (44th). With all six runners returning next season, Coach Rick Carpenter feels confident that he will see a repeat performance next year. The men's team lost several good run- ners because of Graduation. The team was led by the sole returning runner, senior captain John Kebler, whose fine season included finishing in the first four positions in nine out of eleven races. He also set a new Western Maryland College record on his home 8000 meter course, clocking in at twenty eight minutes and one second. Strong running was also shown by fresh· man Joe Hedrick, foreshadowing a bright future, and sophomore Dan Wilson, who improved his time by over four minutes to break the thirty minute banner on the home course. Also turning in consistent performances throughout the season were freshman Jim Startt and senior Kevin At- kins. 104
