GAMMA BETA CHI "The Betes" Many critics would hesitate to link the words "brotherhood" and "individuality" when speaking of a fraternity. Indeed some would deny the existence of either. Gamma Beta Chi, however, has attempted to retain the personality, initiative, eccentricity, and leader- ship of its brothers, while guiding these qualities to group unity and social service. 1970 continues this tradition. GBX brothers spring-up wherever college activity occurs, whether it be on Hoffa Field, in Gill Gym, on Faculty-Student committees, or the Down Town Tavern. Through the year, the brothers have engaged in a well-rounded series of campus events, high-lighted by our student-faculty teas, the Spring Carnival for the Maryland School for the Deaf, the Major Moore Scholarship Fund, and the famous Christmas tree drive (of dubious merit). The social calendar has remained both varied and invigorating, ranging from the lecher- ous "Hungry Mother" Party to the annual spring formal. Finally and most importantly, the realization of scholarship and leadership as attainable goals has remained an integral part of Gamma Beta Chi. The Brotherhood maintained the highest grade point average for the second straight semester and had members in leadership positions in many campus organizations, including ODK, class Presidencies, Argonauts, and Who's Who. 139
