Naked limbs twist up and out; gnarled arms,
Straining under gravity's fluid chains,
Striving to touch the ice blue autumn sky;
Discarded leaves, dull and dry, drape the ground,
Carpeting vital roots.
The tree, bare and proud,
Sees clear in the crisp cool air, senses true
The unfiltered heat of the sun, feels the thrill
Of the chill of the wildly racing wind.
But autumn wanes and winter grabs the reins
And commences its clutch of cold, conspires
To choke the rising sap of the thriving tree,
Staying reaching arms with frigid hands,
Freezing ambition at its peak.
Spring thaws,
Ignites the tree into a blaze of green fire--
Budding, bursting, blinding walls of leaves
Shroud the groping branches, cloaking the sky.
Fat, the tree waits until it can again
Aspire to vast illimitable sky.
