NIGHT DRIVE
Two beams of light approach me out of pitch darkness
They grow,
flare in the windshield,
then disappear.
I turn off the car radio to ponder
in the dark, in the silence.
My own headlights search the road insecurely.
My alternatives are to crash off the side or to
keep groping the road
not knowing what is ahead.
I decline the former, yet begrudge the latter.
I also Wonder if the other driver thought the same.
Surely each mass of metal and upholstered vinyl
on wheels contains another living being
who ponders the same choice also •.•
Maybe not.
My car is like a steel embryo--
My life its only conscience .•.a whir of wheels
its only companion.

Yet I can't and I go on and on.

Sporadically other cars pass by.
Their headlights grow in the darkness,
flare in the windshield
and disappear.
