WASH ROOM." My mistake was that I forgot to hide my wallet
with me.
Now that it is so close to the end of the year, everybody's nerves
are sort of frayed. As a result, "the gang" has been temporarily split
due to a few absolutely ridiculous fights. My roommate and I are
neutral, thank goodness, but it's still kind of hard since we practically
have to give a password for every different room we want to get into.
Two girls even keep their door locked twenty-four hours a day and
we have to give a special knock to get in. It's really as stupid as any-
thing.
Mom, I've finally decided what I want to do with myself. I
want to write: STOP-don't shake your head like that. Don't get
excited! Just read what I have to say first. Now, I realize that you
have to be pretty darn good to make any money with writing. Well,
I'm not counting on making a living at it; I just want to write as a
kind of a side job. The way I look at it, you're so less likely to put
your foot in your mouth when you're writing than when you're
talking. See, it takes you longer to write a word than to say a word,
so you have longer to think over what ever word you're going to say.
So many times, if you could just take the time to think over what
you're going to say before you definitely say it out loud, you could
change or eliminate useless or out of place words and ideas. That's
what I like about writing. You can sort of put your mind down on
paper, stand back and look at it, and cross out what you don't like
before you make a fool out of yourself. (This sounds like the "House
that Jack Built.") Another thing I like about writing is that every-
body seems to enjoy the kind of work I do. I'm such a conceited ham
that I could just about roll over and play dead whenever anybody
says anything nice about what I've written. Anyway, Mom, just let
me think about the idea for awhile. It'll probably go the way of all
other "what-I-want-to-be-when-I-grow-up" tangents. At least Freshman
Composition was great, and I loved it! You should meet my prof.-
what a card!
Well, it won't be long until summer vacation. I can't wait to see
everybody, though I'll kind of miss this old place.
You might send me a little money. This is positively the last
request before summer.
Love,
Charlotte
