compliments, and blushes as she pins the pink rosebud corsage to
her yellow gown. The dance is a big success, and that night the Girl
goes to sleep, glad she wore what she wore, and dreaming of going to
the movies on Monday night with HIM.

            TO BE REMEMBERED

      The moon came darting across the waves. The glistening drops
smashed the unending shore and drifted lazily back to sea.

       I was walking on the damp sand watching the throbbing waves
racing to the beach when, slowly turning in the shadowy light,
I suddenly noticed my footprints. As I watched, ripples of water came
and filled the odd-shaped holes and soon the beach was smooth again.

      A little later while I was lying in my bed and listening to the dis-
~ant booming of the sea, I thought of those footprints-so small on
mfinite grains of sand.

       One day we were building houses in the sand. I had built an
ordinary two-story house but Norwood's with its split-level styling
and underground garage was a masterpiece of sand and water archi-
tecture. Filled with childish jealousy, I said, "It looks like an anthill."

      He looked up at me with those piercing blue eyes, a little wider
than usual, and said, "My grandfather told me that if somebody knew
more about something than I did to be quiet and listen." I never
forgot.

      After that summer he moved away but my mind was still full
of memories of tree huts, boat rides, secret organizations, and catch-
ing fish. Soon I stopped thinking of the games we played and my
thoughts became the things he'd said and the way he'd acted. I thought
of the explanation he gave of how to build a pier, how to fix the
brakes on a bicycle, how to climb a tree and catch a baseball.

      As the years passed, I remembered his face with that strong
determined look. His wavy blond hair frequently fell over his fore-
head and he would hastily push it back with his oil-covered hands-
