thick voice inquire, "May I have this dance?"
Cindy smiled and extended her hand, "Yes, certainly," came her
sincere reply, and in .the next instant she was whirling about on the
smooth polished floor.
"I'm Mike Farrell, a senior here at Shelby. "What's your name?"
"Lucinda Holiday, but everyone calls me Cindy, so I wish you'd
do the same."
"O.K., Cindy, what do you think of our little community and
your new home?"
"I think it's just wonderful, and I'm awfully happy to be here; the
people are simply grand and so friendly."
"Well, we're glad to have you and hope you're a success at ...
what are you going to major in?"
"I want to teach school, probably elementary, but right now I'm
going to major in English and maybe get some writing experience.
What are your plans for the future?"
"Going into research work which means graduate study. I majored
in biology here. Thanks for the dance, and how 'bout saving me an ..
other later?"
"Fine, Mike, thank you."
Mike left Cindy on the edge of a group of girls, giving her a wink.
She watched him move across to several boys, who appeared also to be
upperclassmen, and then she looked around for Audie.
She found her at the refreshment table and they moved to the
sidelines to compare notes.
"Who was the tall, dark, and handsome, Cin? Looks like you're
off to a good start. Did you see my first partner? What a creep, but
he's easy to follow. He didn't waste time either, asked me to go for a
snack at the Varsity Shop. So I guess I'll meet you in the room at
eleven."
Cindy couldn't help laughing at the eagerness in Audie's voice ..
It was nice to have a good time and feel that friends were doing the
same.
"All right, Audie, but I want a full report when you come in."
The two girls parted and Cindy spent the major part of the eve-
ning meeting girls and boys who were going to compose the class of
'61, kids who were to be a part of her new life here in Pennsylvania ..
Then it was nearly eleven and she was about to go back to her room
with two girls from her floor, when Mike returned.
"Hey, you didn't forget that dance you promised me, did you?"
"No, I hadn't forgotten, I thought maybe you were too busy and
