HUGH CARROLL BURKINS Greek "Senator" Baltimore, Maryland Western Maryland Preparatory School Webster Literary Society; Secretary Y. M. ,C. A., '25; Chairman Freshman Class, '22; Presi- dent Theological Association, '25; Treasurer Sunday School, '24, '25; ALOHA Staff; Jesters, '22; College Players, '24; Norment Contestant, '22; Winner Norment Pri~e, '23; Poets' Club. "Could we forbear dispute, and practice love, We should agree as angels do above." "SENATOR" did not come from Penn. nor Princeton, b~t he won his letter "P" just the same. He received his letter by entering into three major 'activities at Western Maryland, namely, Poetry, Presidency, and Parlor. Aside from volley ball and chess, Carroll's chief hobby was writing poetry. He wrote it anytime and almost anywhere; the fly leaves and margins of his books furnished ample space for him to jot down his inspirations. More than once we read his poetry in the "Monthly" and were proud to recognize "H. C. B." as our classmate. The Theological Association, recognizing his ability to lead men, asked him in his Senior year to be president of their organization. We have often wondered where Carroll got so much inspiration to write poetry, but the secret has finally been revealed to us. Here is the secret formula: an Eastern Sho" co-ed, plus four years of Parlor, plus a diamond. [42]
