JOURNAL: HER CREATION STORY

                            Anne Koenig

  Day One:

  Silly and sundry Sunday thoughts: I like stream of con-
  scious thought, siliquous, snap purses, slinkies, sea breezes,
  sun showers, sand between my toes, sucking away on a
  cherry lolly pop until you reach the soft chocolate center,
  sleeping soundly when it snows, Sunday morning coffee
  with the Times, the sweet crunch of corn, sweater dresses, St.
  Croix, seasoned tomatoes with herbs, spring radishes, send-
  ing an unsigned card to someone, Scan furniture, sleeping
  dogs, steel drums, ships at sea, strawberries from Oregon,
  self-reliance, strength, stiff baguettes with soft centers, your
  stiffness in my soft center.

  Day Two:

  I stare at you, unable to resist touching your soft curls or
  putting my hand on your back in a primal gesture of mark-
  ing my territory. You stare back at me in my black velvet
  evening dress, taking in my hair swept up in a French knot,
  noting the simple strand of pearls draped around my tan
  neck; liking my muscular legs ... you tell me I am a beauti-
  ful woman. I believe you, however, both of us realize that
  adventure is really not from externals but within us ... we
 fall deeper into the quest of passionate love.

 Day Three:

 Bedtime conversations in the still of night
 making sense like word salads to a therapist;
 You comment on the distant whistle of the train;
 my thoughts trail off to the secrets of midnight.

 Body communications of soft sheets;
