Early Autumn
Fading sunlight shimmers on the saxophones
The final summer breeze rides over their notes
Trumpets threaten winter ice in the background
blasts pierce through
not yet reaching the full measure of their power
Summer has something left to say
An alto testifies on behalf of romance
that gift of summer moonlight
The baritone reaches up with the simplest "I love you"
Sweet sounds of summer ease linger as the pianoman's fingers swirl
stray leavesfallen to an early frost
The final rally of triplets trip
tumble
fall to the cold heralds of
our season's demise
Undeniable
the tenor laments the
passing on of time into
ghastly shadows of death
bare branches stretched toward heaven
seeking mercy
from the chill that settles
on my shoulders
