FENCED IN, FENCED OUT

                   He looked out from
                     the chain-link fence

              Anxiously POking his nose
                through the maze of steel-

         Fevertshly clawIng, trying to reach
                      the world beyond.

And the other, she peered in-
She. too. clung to the prtson-like shield.

          WrapPing small fingers around
                the diamond-shaped webs.

         They touched their faces together
                    as best they could-

               The dog and that child.

The two longed for the day
                  when they would grow
                           older
                         stronger
                          bigger-

The day when they'd be free With one another.

             And finally the day came.
               The dog mastered the fence

                   And With a leap
                 they were together.

She had. at last. a faithful companion
and she co~ld touch his cheek easily.
For now there were no barriers
                    between them.
