scraping would have been enough to assure him
that he was not the only other living being in
existence. Adam constantly craved this confir-
mation. There was no doorknob or latch that he
could see and the metal plate covered the key-
hole and completely suffocated any human
sound that might have come from out there.
When the images of his nightmare returned, he
ran his hand over the wooden surface. feeling
the wood that he could never touch in his
dream. Splinters caught the skin of his palm
and he tightened his hand into a fist. He had
long since learned the futility of pounding but
his hands still involuntarily drew into fists.
Adam did not strike the door; he Withdrew back-
ward as a sickening feeling arose in his stomach
from prolonged contact With this monstrosity.
What little light did remain in the room
mockingly shone on the metal plate. Adam
turned his eyes away and sank to the floor. His
hands groped for his ears as his hands fell back
against a wall. DraWingon the last of his en-
ergy, Adam commenced his one ritualistic activ-
ity. He raised his hand against the wall and
hooked his fingers into a claw. With his finger-
nails, long and dirty, he scratched a definitive
amount of loose stone away from the wall- the
seventh mark.
