                       "Going Barefoot"

I can remember
        the sensation of mud
                 squtshtng between bare toes

WhUewalking through Mom's garden .
.And how my feet,

        covered with freshly
                 mowed grass left a trail

On the kitchen floor.
Hot pavement burned

        my soles
running to Cathy's house in July

To catch the ice cream man.
Walking out beyond

         the breakers,
h ocean pebbles
lVlademe flinch.
Sticky sap

         clung to my feet
                 as I played

~nder the pine tree.
t was great to be young

         and barefoot. . .
But now. in adulthood

        and in shoes.
                 there is a dull "sameness"
                         in walking places.
