        ENLIGHTENMENT
    A PROCESS IN INFINITE ACTS
                           CAST
       (IN ORDER OF EXISTENCE)
    SELF: Elizabeth Creagh
REASON: Itself, as interpreted by its fellow-actor
                                           SETTING
THE SCENE: a state of great activity, in the vicinity of self-knowledge
    THE TIME: psychological
SELF: I have something to tell you.
    REASON: Proceed.
SELF: I don't need you any more.
    REASON: Prove it.
SELF: I could prove it by denying the necessity of proving it, couldn't I?
REASON: Indubitably, but I should remind you that we've been very close
for a long time, and that lately you've seemed quite attached to me-
dependent on me, even. Reason calls for an explanation, if you'd be so
          kind.
SELF: Define "very." Define "long." Define "kind."
REASON: VERY: in the fullest sense; in a high degree.
on the laLsOt.NG: in this case, about 6 years, with special concentration
KIND: sympathetic, friendly, tenderhearted; considerate of
          others' (PAUSE) feelings.
SELF: Feelings! What do you know of feelings?
    REASON: Define "know."
SELF: KNOW: to perceive directly with the senses or mind; apprehend
          with clarity and certainty.
REASON: Then, I know nothing of feelings. I have none.
SELF: For what reason, then, should I be considerate of them?
    REASON: No reason.
SELF: Then, do you still require an explanation?
REASON: I do not; however, I am certain we would both benefit from a
demonstration of the process by which you have arrived at your new
          state of independence.
