The people were gone and the school bus was on its side
in a junkyard. Fires flickered throughout the valley at night,
the white church crumbled in a burst of orange flames; the bones
were safely loaded in vans. The citizens committee of some
nearby city had failed to save the covered bridge; in a cave they
found paintings on the walls. Inside a shack deep in the forest
an upset bulldozer operator found a body, and a book: The Light
That Failed.
