       It took them half an hour to get the wood burning good 1,11 the
freezing cold. They had to stand in a circle around the fire and light
newspapers, then somehow get the newspapers to cause the tWI,gS to
burn. Some of the twigs were wet. And they smoked, Buteventl\ally
there was a fire.

       Then they stood around as it flickered and reflected off their
robes. Crowds began to gather.

       When a great multituds was there they raised tile cross. The
crowd cheered.

      The leader walked slowly to the platform amid the ovation. He
spoke. He spoke hate, injustice, fascist hate, muslim hate, klan hate.

      Nearby tile field was a small frame church. The minister looked
out tile window and saw the cross, and heard the noise, and could not
understand the hate.

       The voices from tile field were singing:

             On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
             the emblem of suffering and shame.

      The multitude sang it. Their voices rose in the piousness of
hate.

   He walked through the multitude up to tile leader. He was robe-

less among the robes. He wore black among the white.               f

     Leave here, he said. Leave here and do not return. God I'S a

love, not of your hate,
