Reverend AI Carmines Off Off Broadway, a new era in theatre was introduced to WMC last fall. Reverend Carmines eased on to the quiet Whimsee campus only to explode suddenly with his new ideas on drama and religion. Hard-nosed conservatives were shocked by the fact that a man of the collar intro- duced new wordless action plays, and controversial sub- ject matter. He culminated his evening with a showing of Another Pilgrim, a film that ended with an impromptu striptease by a minister, Other reactions were those of excited satisfaction, just knowing an evolution in Amer- ican theatre could also breathe life into an outmoded institution-the church. Reverend Marvin Chandler A Night of Soul from Brother Chandler was a soul picnic in every sense. Chandler's depth and sensitivity were strong enough to break through the white crust of the chapel audience (those people that found it possible to attend). Their whiteness gradually faded away and they heard Marvin Chandler; they realized his talent, and they realized that he was not just a black man singing black songs, but a soul man singing from his soul. 53
