If the going got rough at times, if Kay couldn't put the right inflection into "Leeoo- nnaaarrrrdd!" and if Marilyn couldn't put enough "feeling" into the final kiss with Matt, there were always Bob Vickery's rousing tunes to spark the cast. Soon every junior was whistling "Pennypacker U.," "Highway US," and "Words of the Wise." Dottie was often found muttering "If you're in a fix, if you're on the spot ... " while the optimistic Sheeley countered with "It's just a matter of confi- dence!" Confidence or soul-selling, the cast did learn to dance, Dottie did add fifteen verses to Bill's song, Bob did orchestrate the music in time for opening night, Barb did produce a slide of Hitler, Kay did dance like a boy (and Bill like a girl), and Marilyn and Matt did put "feeling" into their final embrace. The Class realized there was a good deal of partiality in remarks like Dr. Ensor's "It would do credit to Broadway," but there was no mistaking that the audience thoroughly en- joyed the performance. "Better than anything I've seen in Alumni Hall in the fifteen years I've been here," said one faculty member, and in an argument with a conservative colleague, another staunchly defended the ribaldry on the grounds that "farce is the proper time to roll in the dust as well as ascend to the clouds, and this show did both." Now the campus looked with new respect at the Class of '64, and joined with the happy juniors in a very sincere utterance of "I'll Be Damned!" 58
