CONTRAST - 72

FROM THE PAST,

LOOKING FORWARD AT LOOKING BACK

BY STEFAN SPECIAN

The lights shone down and there we were,
chasing miracles in the twilight, facing the
inevitable with starry eyes and the twinkling
smiles of the jaded, the disillusioned, the too
old for their years - vodka in our bellies,
very little left in our hearts and souls, and
some semblance of intelligence in our minds.

Where are you now friend? Burned out, naked
on a mattress in New York? Gaseous and floating
on the wind across the wild expanses of dying
America, buffeted by the wind turbines and huffing
gasoline odors rising off the highway in Kansas?
Suited and bespectacled in Georgetown, head full
of figures and body full of pills, pills, pills?

I am where I was before, where we always were -
perhaps that's the worst off all? To stay
stationary as the cosmos swirl around you like
a maelstrom, unhinged from reality and unstuck
in time. Where the world is still mine.
Meet me there some time - I'll buy the drinks.
