THE MISCONCEPTION
BY SARA BASTIAN
he stumbled into the kitchen,
drenched in melancholia.
overcome with something unfamiliar ...
so overcome by this peculiar something that most days he was ignorant
of the thing's existence.
fumes of food overcame the thing that overcame him.
so he stood there
basking in his glorious gourmet
whilst simultaneously
basking in his unfortunate sadness.
after he ate all of his concoctions
what left was there to do?
he refused to acknowledge himself.
tea.
warm &
comforting.
the kettle is squealing steam
the boiling water is
begging to be poured out
begging to be released.
the tea bag is opened with care,
because he cannot afford to be destructive.
he places the tea bag into the mug
and delicately pours the water in to join the tea,
impressively and conveniently avoiding the heat.
for a brief second
he sees himself in the broiling water
but then
the tea mingles with the clear liquid
and becomes opaque.
confused
but yet relieved
he adds raw honey & sips his tea.
the boy cannot help but think
"who is that strange person i saw?"
he brushes it off,
giving credit to his imagination.
oh how wrong he is.
eventually,
he will be full.
he will have no choice but to leave the kitchen.
inevitably, he must come face to face
with himself.
