Alex could not believe her eyes when she opened the door
to find a man wearing thick-framed glasses and a tight-fitting
plaid shirt holding a bouquet of daisies.

“They’re ironic,” said the man in a dull voice with a quick
nod at the flowers.

“Well, I certainly didn’t expect them,” said Alex. “And I
can’t say I expected you either. Who are you?”

“I’m Chad,” said the man in his still-dull voice.
“Chad?” asked Alex, hoping to glean more information.
“Chad.” Perhaps he was still trying to be ironic.
Alex wasn’t impressed. “Okay, Chad. What are you doing
here?”
     “I dunno.”
     “You don’t know?”
     “No.”
The two stared blankly at each other for a moment. Then
Chad said, “I brought these for you.”
He shoved the daisies, which Alex now noticed were
wilting, into her arms.
     “Um, bye,” said Chad.
     He walked away.
