As we prepare to leave, I can tell that my classmates
feel the combination of forces tumbling around them as
well. We pack the van dutifully, and no one remarks
about the moist odor that pervades the van.
As we make our way out of the valley in the daylight,
we all silently strain and lean over each other to catch
final glimpses and pictures of our favorite and now
familiar peaks. For a long time after exiting the park, the
entire group sits in complete silence. Complexity may
pervade Yosemite, but so does a startling clarity. The
majesty of the mountains has chastened us, enlightened
us, humbled us. The snow has made us clean.
