Editor’s Note
“What if you slept? And what if, in your sleep, you went to
heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower? And
what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand? Ah,
what then?”
–Samuel Taylor Coleridge
What Contrast Literary Magazine essentially provides is a solid
sense of community on Campus for those interested in Creative
Writing, which it has done for the past four years I have been
involved. From Contrast, I have taken away insightful ideas and
experiences as well as made some important friendships with
other like-minded, literary oriented individuals who enjoy read-
ing, writing, and promoting the role of the ‘artist’ and the ‘writer’,
and whatever those roles entail.
My vision for Contrast this year has been a vision of in-
tellectual growth, artistic experimentation, and creative freedom.
To make a better magazine, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean
a better editor, a more fortuitous horoscope, or higher spending
put into the design. Editors can be literary superstars, but can
only do so much and the quality of the magazine depends of the
quality of the material—which is what I have strived to promote
this year, through creative writing workshops, lessons, and rigor-
ous commitment to the writing process. Thank you to all who at-
tended the groups last semester, your work amazed me and made
me proud to be this year’s co-editor.
For those of you reading this, whether or not you have an
interest in literature, reading and writing, I encourage you to flip
through these pages, and see what interests you, and see what
new ideas have been waiting for you. Literature gives people an
idea of what it is to be free, to see the life we’re missing that lets
us know we’re alive—seeing what we’re meant to experience,
not merely experience the world as the world wants us to see it.
