Beyond its dictionary definitions, "Contrast" has come to mean something more for the
McDaniel College community: it is the literary magazine. This year, we hoped to broaden that
definition.
We scrapped the occasional cash prize contests and invested instead in coffee urns, tea
bags, and snack aisle goodies. We set up a Facebook group, started an email list, and papered
the campus with fliers. We began hosting weekly alternating creative writing workshops and
poetry readings.
We did all of this before we held a single meeting about the magazine.
. The goals of these weekly workshops and readings held in the homey space of the
Richwine room were to create a space for McDaniel writers to share their work, be exposed to
what other students were doing, and discover literature outside the context of the classroom.
Even more, we wanted to help build a literary arts community on campus.
. One fundamental thing has not changed this year: Contrast is still McDaniel College's
hterary magazine.
tho Now a.tthe end of a year that started with high hopes and high ambitions, we view
IS ~agazm~ as the tangible evidence of what we have accomplished. It's much harder to
bquan. tify. the mtanoibles but we'd like to think that even if everything we envisioned at the
0"
egmnmg has not come to fruition we have, at the very least, planted a seed .
.Of course, we couldn't have made the magazine without the help of our Editorial Board,
Desl~ & Layout Team, and Production Staff. There were many hours spent reading pieces,
makmg selections, editing, laying out pages, and hammering out those tiny details that pop
up at the last moment.
We would also like to thank our faculty adviser, Kate Dobson, who encouraged us as we
s~~ght to broaden the definition of Contrast and supported us as we struggled to realize our
VISIon.
~nd we thank you, the reader, for picking this up. We hope you enjoy and are even
surpnsed by what we've decided to include in this year's edition, and we invite you to join
next year's editor and staff in broadening the definition of Contrast.
