CONTRAST 1989

                         Once Upon A Time

   Grandpa butlt me a playhouse
Out of old lumber from the lot next door.
The splintered wood changed into walls of gold
As I became princess of my palace.
And Grandpa- he was my shining knight
Who would travel to the ends of the earth
   To please his royal lady.
His hammerhead cane was his lucky sword
In his quest to bring me the Holy Grail.
I would sit on my milk crate throne,
.And adjust my tin foil crown,
Waiting for my knightto return to me
   From kingdoms of worlds unknown.
His arms were laden With gifts
Of flowers and shells and dime store rings,
When he returned to the castle.
He told tales of dragons and defeated knights
Who were powerless to his mighty sword.

A branch fell down dUring a thunderstorm:
I watched it tear through the roof
   Of my royal palace.
No longer had I a throne to sit upon.
And Grandpa went on a Journey from which he
   never returned.
I was told he moved to a better kingdom.
