my leafy domain.
"Squire! Lower the drawbridge. Your King
has returned to you without a scratch and the
terrible Grog has been defeatedl" I stood looking
up at the branches in the early afternoon light; a
squirrel was running along the east wing.
"Squire! Lower the drawbridgel Your King has
returned!!" I yelled up into the rustling green.
This was no way to treat a King. It was an
absent thought. "Squire!!- the bridge!" I leaned
against the trunk of my tree waiting for a minute
and then reluctantly swung my legs up and over
the first branch- the empty throne room. I
shrugged my shoulders and thought about the
lost magic as I pulled out my notebook and
began to Write on a clean page:
"When squires won't lower the drawbridge.
do it yourself."
Those words were written as yesterday.
when I closed the Worn book and let it drop back
into the box labelled "Bill's Stuff." Looking out
the attic window I smiled at the group of kids
chaSing each other around the base of a big
maple tree.
