Valentine's next
brought Daddy home
after dark
bearing chocolates
and a card.
Ripping at the envelope
I was baffled
by the wisp of a girl,
long blond hair trailing
as she swung from the scales.
Untactfully I explained
the mistake
to my unbelieving daddy.
I raced to my room,
rummaged through my desk,
uncovered the original,
and presented the twins.
Daddy shrugged, "Ob well."

I ate my chocolates
and added to my desk
the duplicte
and that cherry red poodle.

This morning
stepping on the scale
I pondered
the value of 115 pounds of gold.
I rummaged through my desk
for my car keys
and ran from my apartment,
long brown hair trailing,
ignoring the mail box as I passed,
not expecting a card from Daddy,
no longer pretending
I was a daddy's girl.
