SUBTLE REACH
Sometimes when you calmly
hold on to your soul
because it's yours
victims of restless silence
will want to bruise it
they'll pound on it
scratch it
and recklessly rip apart
the very essence that brings it together--
the way you laugh
and talk and sit
and mostly when you smile
they'll try to pry it open
to watch it bleed
and drown in itself.
Sometimes when I reach out my hand
you let it blossom
and gently curl around my fingers
and sometimes when I watch you sleep
I can smell feel and taste
a hundred springtimes
in every breath you take.
