SHADOWS ON THE WALL

He was asleep, unaware of her body beside him. tired day,
She stared through the street shadowed room. in broken

                                    Tomorrow he'd exist in another
                                    and she'd spend the morning
                                    sleep
                                    to rise dully at 9

                                          or 9:15,
                                          or 9:55,
                                          or -

He heaved, rolled against her,

naked shoulder burning hot on her flesh.
Moaned.

Somewhere a church clock began its countdown.

Rapid, melancholy booms ...

                                                             34
Compelled, she unwillingly counted.

                                                       67
apathetically irritated at being unable

to control the small forces of life .

                                                                    10 11

to see through fogs ..

                                               12.

He breathed deeply.
She stared at shadows on the wall.
