MORNING TOGETHER

                  Expanses of cool smooth
                  just-washed skin
                  touch
                  and slide together.
                  I remember

Slipping between the clean fresh sheets of my childhood bed.
Skipping outdoors on the first day of spring,

coatless for the first time since November.
Crunching into a crisp unbruised apple with a tart sweet taste

                                        throughout its juicy interior.
Holding a young puppy in my arms as it squirms and kicks

in its eagerness to lick my face
                                        with its small rough tongue.
The fever and perspiration of the night
                  have been rinsed away
                  with the scented white lather
                  of dawn.

                                                                                                     Beth White
