Eddi( , you milk 'at goat?

"Eddie, you milk 'at goat?"
"No, not net."
"Better go milk 'er."
Eddie came back with an empty pail of
milk. He poured the air into five
saucers, gave one to three kittens,
and one to the dog, Neener. The
three of us drank the rest.
"There ain't nothing in this," I said.
Bean wiped his arm across his nv;)uth
and said: "I know. The old goat's
been dry for pert near three years."
"What do you drink?" 1 asked.
"Wegotta drink this. Bean raises his
saucer. "Thats all we got."
I was getting hungry. "But don't you
have anything else to eat or drink
besides this empty saucer of milk. It
"Nope." Bean said. ''We're vegetarians.
"Ain't that right, Eddie."
"Nep!" exclaimed Eddie.
"Being vegetarians makes it kinda

handy," Bean explained. "we ' ain't got

no ~at anyhowbut the goat, and we
need him for the milk."
I didn't understand, but I was too
hungry to understand. I looked at
Eddie because he kept slurping in
his saucer. He lifted the saucer
nodding and winking wildly.
"Nood, nain' t nit; , " He kept saying.
