walked more than six miles. Where did the time
go? He found he was quite tired. Soon he had to
stop at the next rock formation and lie down.
He dozed fitfully.
Tommy had a dream. A slender Indian confronted
a big soldier. The soldier grinned at how he
would have this Indian under his thumb.
"This is private property."
"N 0 man can own the land."
"Indian, you will do as I tell you."
"I will do what is rightfully mine to do."
The soldier raised his rifle. The Indian
qUietly smiled.
You are too greedy to understand that when
you seek to bring others under your power, and
seek to own the land, you really lose your greatest
power, and you lose what you truly own."
"Move." The gun barrel lowered.
"I shall stay."
Sweat poured from the soldier's face. He
held his rifle at the Indiaft's forehead. The
Indian remained calm. The rifle fired, and the
Indian dropped. Immediately another Indian
barred his way with the same quiet smile.
Tommy awoke. It felt as though hours
had passed since he collapsed in these rocks,
but the sun just peeked through the clouds on
the horizon. He was strangely moved, but in
the walk home the dream slowly faded from him in
the freezing cold. Finally the shack was in
:tront of him, a dark blotch on the now moonlit
snow.
The young man sank into his chair. He
thought of his weariness and almost immediately
rose up, grabbing a small bottle, his cigarettes.

inhaled smoke and then shot the whiskey. He
