Preface

At the beginning of the school year, a small nucleus of interested
people met to decide the fate of our literary magazine, Contrast. After
a new staff was organized, it became increasingly evident that only a
handful of students here at Western Maryland are seriously interested
in writing. And since Contrast is dedicated to presenting the work
of such individuals, all people involved with the publication naturally
became concerned. The question has now become, not-will Contrast
continue-but, shall we continue to provide a place for these people
in our college community, or shall we make of ourselves a reading
public that is taken in by mass-appeal literature?
