"Farsurpassing wealth unspoken. Ever may they be." During Jan Term, the Board of Trustees announced their decision to change the name of the College. However, this decision did not sit well with many students, parents, and alumni. They wondered why the Board decided to announce the name change at a time when most students and faculty were not on campus. A petition against the name change was cir- culated on the internet and lots of media coverage ensued. The Board asked everyone for their input on a new name suggestion. In mid-April, the Board met and voted on the new name for the College. It remained a secret until the campus-wide announcement on May 10, 2002. At that time, the College held a party on campus and gave away tee shirts imprinted with the new name and logo. Those who were not able to attend that evening could log onto a website or dial an 800 number to learn the new name. On July 1, 2002, Western Maryland College became McDaniel College in honor of William McDaniel. Over his 6S-year association with the College, William McDaniel was a student, alumnus, professor, treasurer, vice presi- dent, acting president, and trustee of Western Maryland College. The Board deemed it quite fitting to honor Mr. McDaniel in this way. William Roberts McDaniel 1861 - 1942 15
