• • Signing Western Maryland College is the only college in Maryland to have a nationally More Than recognized program for training students to teach the deaf. Spoken Words Undergraduate semester hours of work are available in this field, but one can be fully certified according to standards set by the Council on Educa- tion of the Deaf only if he or she re- ceives a Master of Science in this field. Students, both deaf and hearing, are taught signed English. A course is also taught in Ameslan of American Sign Language. Non-hearing and hearing students on campus form a group called Sounds of Silence which gives students the opportunity to practice their signing skills as well as educate others on deafness. The Sounds of Silence Club hosted its annual performance night on April 25. "We performed the Deaf history, mime, songs, jokes, and ABC skits. It was a great night," said John Green. "Our bond as members of the club is wonder- ful," he added. S.O.S. also sold mag- nets and painted faces at Spring Fling. 58 Sounds of Silence
