FOOTBALL , . . . You Must Have Good Players To Work With, And We Did.' Football The 1981 Football season storIed with a lot of new faces. There was a new head cooch. three new cssrtcnts. a new offense. and a new stadium, Head cooch Molesworth, a 1952 graduate, returned to his alma mater after a highly scccssstortern with the Freder- ick County school system. With him he brought a new offense. The wishbone had decoyed and the open-end T featuring an unbalanced line and a sprint-out pass, was introduced After some time of training and practice, the offense came together very nicely under senior Quarterback Jim Selfridge and the team went on to a 5-3-1 record. Offensively, the team was able to gain 252 yards per game and overage 18points per game. Sel- fridge himself averaged 159.6 yards total of- fense per game, ron for eight touchdowns, threw for six more, and rushed for a pair of two-point conversions. The Defense was once again the "pride" of Western Maryland College Football. The defensJve unit did allow almost 258 yards per game, but were very stingy with the bread and butter. allowing less than 12 points per game. Linebacker Steve James was the squads leading tackler with 64. and also a first team MAC All-South candidate The Award winners from this year's team should also be commended. They were Bob DeBeer Tight End. a junior from Cedar Grove, N.J. He was named to the All-Maryland team. honorable mention. Steve James, a senior linebacker from Milford, N.J. was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference All-South First Team, and the All-Maryland first team. Next is Rick Johnson, a sophomore kicker-wide receiver from Severna Pork, Md He was named to the All-Maryland first yearn as a kicker. Tom Knieriem, a senior Defensive Back. from Hialeah. Flo, was named to the All-Maryland first team ond the Middle Atlan- tic Conference All-South Team. honoralble Mention. Also Quarterback Jim Selfridge, a senior out of Miramar. Flo .. was named to the All-Maryland and Middle Atlantic Conference All-South teams. both with honorable men- tions. Defensive End Bob Upshaw, a senior from Pembrooke Pines, Flo .. was named to the All-Maryland first team, and the Middle Atlantic Conference All-South team. again Honorable Mention. And last. but surely not least senior Tackle Dennis Yancheski. a stal- wart out of Baltimore, Md .. was named to the All-Maryland Team. Honorable Mention These fine athletes. and many more just like them combined to make this year's team a very good one. One that can boost a 5-3-1 record. A record that enabled them to tie for a third place in the Middle Atlantic Confer- ence Southern Division.
