While many were taking advantage of the last few days of the summer vacation, Western Maryland was swinging into action for another academic year. Student leaders and repre- sentatives of the faculty and administration re- turned to campus early to inaugurate the first annual Student Leadership Conference with the theme "Helping the Hill." Concentrated discussions resulted in a statement of proposals designed to improve the intellectual tone and general morale of the campus. Three days later confused freshmen swarmed over the campus, ready to be oriented into a new way of life. A service provided to fresh- men girls only was that of baggage patrol. This was rendered by a wolfish-looking group of campus veterans who thus had the oppor- tunity of sizing up the date material. After rapidly establishing themselves in their new environment, frosh were introduced to the "hurry up and wait" routine. A welcoming battery of tests and meetings, and a barrage of propaganda served only to confuse them, but they quickly learned such vital facts as the combinations to their mail boxes and the route to the movie theater. Freshmen had their helpless moments ... But the "leaders" tried to make life a bit easier. 170
