Stacy

She looked at me with a light in her eyes--
She'd just brought a baby into this world.
What mystery have I missed?
Why have I not yet experienced this wonder?
Because I am young.

I looked at her with sadness,
And maybe just a twinge of envy.
After all, she had something I did not.
She had a baby--two, in fact--
At nineteen.

She looked at me with sorrow, joy, and fear.
After all, I am free
And she is not.
I answer to no one.
She answers to two.

For the time being we must stand
On opposites sides of the fence
Looking at the green grass afar,
Knowing it will not
Make ours grow any faster.
