The exposition was easy; seventy-two pages of falling in love
as time slipped away from us in sentences
read aloud over coffee and lunch.
But the plot rwist had to come; the action had to rise,
and the dedication scrawled inside her cover had yet to be worn out.
Iwould never tear at her binding with nervous hands and teeth;
never would I turn her pages and smooth the dogeared corners flat -
- a sign that someone else before had loved her.
Itake a little comfort in the fact that where Iscribbled in her margins,
Iused permanent ink.
