A Note from the Editor:

A total solar eclipse can occur only when the moon is in its new phase. At
this time the moon is between the sun and the earth and cannot be seen
until it moves across the sun's disk. At the onset of totality, parts of the sun
may be seen shining brightly between the high points of the moon's irregu-
  lar edge.

Just as the moon is in its new phase, so is the McDaniel College
community. Excellence is not handed to us; we must work diligently and
together to produce the shining light that breaks through the darkness. We
must remain dedicated to our goals and our dreams, and despite adversity
 turn them into reality.

As my final year leading Contrast literary Magazine, I am left with mixed
emotions. While I am quite pleased with the literary and artistic master-
pieces you will find in "eclipse," I am concerned about the legacy of the
magazine and how it will survive in the years to come. Regardless of what
anyone says, the production of this magazine is not an easy task and very
few students are willing to go the distance. If you are interested in continu-
ing to raise the bar of Contrast literary magazine, please see our advisor.
Do not let the overcast of the moon prevent the light from shining. For these
are lights that live deep within every member of the McDaniel community,
and beacon to be seen and acknowledged. There is so much talent waiting
to be discovered.

Special thanks to my staff, you all know that this magazine is not
possible without you and all of the hard work that you have done. To all
the readers, what are you waiting for? Have you been outside yet?
You're about to witness an eclipse.
