Prelude

The search for unity is often fruitless; our vision obscured by a predilection for the obvious. But
artists will tell you that sometimes it takes immersion in totality to gain an understanding of a
single piece. This immersion. this baptism if you will. has led to the creation of this year's edition of
Contrast. within.
The initial relevance of the theme may be obvious: the magazine is a series of artistic efforts within
paper covers. And yet... there is a sense. as you read. stepping further in even as you come back out
again. of striving. Someone once said that the journey inward is the longest road anyone will ever
have to travel. Inherent within every work is a portion. some mile or two. of that road. of that
endless search for the essence. It is an inner search; sometimes profound; all-consuming. Within
our cacophony of votces. I hope you will find the center. mutable and elusive. to which we aspire.
