What They Said
                                     by Beth Clark

They talked
for the first time in years-

A man and his daughter.
           He wanted to know her
                      And be a family.

At least,
           that's what he said.

He loved her,
           wanted to give her
                      nothing but the best.

Would even give his right arm
           for her-

(A bit much, I'd say.)
He wanted to let her grow

           through experience.
At least,

           that's what he said.

She tried her best
           to understand
                      and talk to him,

All the time wondering
           what he meant-
                      "Honor thy parents."

She told him she's tried.
At least,

           that's what she said.

Finally,
A bitter silence hung in the air

As tears clouded her eyes
           and they both realized

It was much too late
           to start a family now-

Their lives were far too different.
The distance would always be there,
                      No matter what was said.
