she brought her standard with her
the contingencies all planned out
a passionate woman and yet
the priests had gotten through
had she known that codes

and that she had met her soul's
cryptographer
she wouldn't have come
it was in a time of ritual
when the source of rain
was horizontal
and the sun begged wardrobe
of pontiff and prelate

grass
understood
to grow)
it was a time of
whimpering too
for she brought her standard with her
and the priests had gotten through
she couldn't have known
the guarded weave
of witching cloth
else
outdistancing explanation
suspicion would have sanded
her mind against all men but some of us
had gotten through
and
she was a passionate woman
